"Confidential Passenger Data Used for Air Security Project - EPIC outs NorthWest and NASA via FOIA
washingtonpost.com: "Northwest Airlines provided information on millions of passengers for a secret U.S. government air security project soon after the Sept. 11th terrorist attacks, raising fresh concerns among some privacy advocates about the airlines' use of confidential consumer data. The nation's fourth-largest carrier publicly asserted in September that it 'did not provide that type of information to anyone.' But Northwest acknowledged Friday it had already turned over three months of reservation data to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's Ames Research Center by that point." Northwest Airlines gave NASA millions of PNR'shttp://hasbrouck.org/blog/archives/000114.html
In late 2001, as several airlines and private contractors were using archived Passenger Name Records to test new concepts for profiling of airline passengers, Northwest Airlines (NW) gave CD's containing PNR's for perhaps 10 million or more NW passengers to the USA National Aeronautics and Space Administration for testing of airline passenger profiling concepts.
NASA's request for NW passenger data had been known of for more than a year: it was revealed in documents obtained by the Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC) under the Freedom of Information Act, and had been mentioned in the New York Times in 2002 and in much more detail in the Washington Times , NASA sought airline records (27 September 2003).
But it hadn't been known whether NW had acceded to the NASA request, until EPIC obtained another batch of documents from NASA last month, in response to further FOIA requests. Those documents were revealed in today's Washington Post along with a response from NW; there are responses from NASA in todays's San Jose Mercury News and New York Times ).
NASA requested system-wide Northwest Airlines passenger data from July, August and September 2001 . According to the Post , NW said it actually provided data for October through December 2001, which if system-wide would include PNR's for than 10 million passengers. Neither the documents posted by EPIC nor the comments from NW in the Post make clear whether the NASA request was granted in whole or only in part. More (click)
Another EPIC FOIA lawsuit revealed last year that the FBI obtained onefull year's worth of passenger data from Northwest Airlines after9/11.

"The document revealed that the amount of personal data was sovast that the airline provided it to the FBI on 6000 CDs. Under the pretext of protecting national security in the global “war on terror” States have, for example, violated the right to due process of law, the right to be free from torture and other cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment, the right to be free from discrimination, and even the right to life.
The use of “behavior pattern recognition” has similarly emerged as a trend in counterterrorism training. ...
While a shift away from focusing on the “the type of person” who fits a terrorist profile

Specifically, it concludes that these indicators are proxies for racial, ethnic and religious profiling,

40 Michigan Muslims Claim Racial Profiling by Northwest Airlines
Wednesday, January 17, 2007
DETROIT — A group of 40 Michigan Muslims said Tuesday they were unfairly profiled earlier this month when they were not allowed to board a Northwest Airlines flight in Germany on their way home from a pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia.
A Northwest spokesman said that the travelers reported to the gate Jan. 7 in Frankfurt, Germany, only about 20 minutes before their connecting flight was due to take off. Airline and international rules stipulate that passengers must check in for international flights at least an hour before departure and be onboard the aircraft at least 30 minutes beforehand.
"They showed up at the last minute," spokesman Dean Breest told The Detroit News.
Click here to read The Detroit News story
But the Muslim pilgrims and the Council on American Islamic Relations rejected the airline's statement at a news conference Tuesday, saying flight rules are at least the third reason given for the incident.
"We arrived at the gate at least an hour and 30 minutes before the departure," said Imam Sayed Hassan al-Qazwini of the Islamic Center of America in Dearborn. "Others who came after us were allowed to board the airplane."

Northwest Airlines 'terror' fiasco in Netherlands- the 12 Indians Profiled Handcuffed Humiliated
When I read the article of 12 Indians arrested on a jet by Netherlands for "suspicious behaviour", the first words that came to my mind was - "How could they?" Indeed, thats what everybody ought to think...
Agreed, the Indian passengers had shifted seats among themselves without informing the airplane crew, and apparently exchanged a mobile and laughed more than once, but the question is - How can this be sufficient grounds for arresting them?? This was either an act of stupidity or racial prejudice. Throughout the one and half day ordeal, the passengers were treated as terrorists, irrespective of their vociferous denials and the lack of actual evidence that would point to any terrorist activity- the police considered them guilty. And the reports in newspapers all over the West announced this with great fanfare, as if a major terrorist plot had been prevented.
Would this have happened if the the passengers were boisterous Americans or drunk Europeans?? Would the Netherlands authorities behave so insolently, interrogate them so relentlessly, infringe on their privacy, and then announce their innocence without even an apology??
The so called "guardians of democracy and equality" are guilty of double standards... Is this sensible? It will only fan the fires of anger in the Third World and enable terrorists to strengthen themselves. Are the governments of Europe and America so blind to the current reality that they cant see that all their measures to "control" terrorism have backfired?? Have they no respect for the dignity of others?
Instead of tyrannical measures like "racial profiling" or the infamous "shoot at sight" statement [which led to the death of the innocent Brazilian at the hands of the British police- or should I call it murder?],
...Now, it was 12 Indian passengers.. What next, o ye defenders of the "free" world???"
1st Comment: "my feelings exactly... its blatant racism!"

True, there’s the serious issue of terrorism and everybody wants to have a safe flight. But in the process, are ethnic groups being stereotyped? ROMULUS -- The federal government will monitor Northwest Airlines for at least two years to ensure it more closely investigates employee complaints of racial harassment, according to a proposed lawsuit settlement.

Just this past July...Northwest spokeswoman Kathy Peach declined to comment on the agreement's details. The EEOC also would not comment..."Clearly the presence of nooses and Ku Klux Klan symbols in the workplace, if ignored by Northwest, is the type of discriminatory conduct that might warrant (court action)," the Appeals Court wrote..."Northwest employee Steve Dyer reported seeing a KKK symbol in a restroom and graffiti that referred to the Million Man March as the "Million Monkey March." Another wall writing contained another racial slur. Dyer said he told his supervisor, who allegedly did nothing.

6 Imams Attacked At Minneapolis Airport
Muslim leader calls for U.S. Airways boycott after 6 imams detained & handcuffed/ humiliated without cause-March 06
http://www.iht.com/articles/ap/2006/11/21/america/NA_GEN_US_Passengers_Removed.php
ARTICLE FOLLOWS BELOW:
MINNEAPOLIS: A Muslim cleric on Tuesday called for a boycott of US Airways, and an Islamic advocacy group called for an investigation, after the cleric and five other imams were removed in handcuffs from one of the carrier's flights shortly after three performed their evening prayer ritual.
Omar Shahin's call followed the airline's refusal to sell the six men tickets on another flight after they were forced off the Phoenix-bound Flight 300 Monday evening, an incident the Council on American Islamic Relations said may be linked to a persistent "fear and prejudice against Muslims in the United States.
US Airways flight crews should take "sensitivity training" and learn the difference between Muslims and radical Islamic terrorists, said Bushra Khan, a spokeswoman for CAIR's chapter in Phoenix where the group held a press conference Tuesday.
"The fact that this very small group (terrorists) has hijacked our religion is not going to deter us from speaking out," Khan said, in a reference to the Sept. 11, hijackers and other terrorists. "Prayer is not a suspicious or criminal activity."
The group had been in Minneapolis for the North American Imams Federation conference and were returning home. At the airport terminal, three of them performed their normal evening prayers and boarded the flight individually, except for one of the clerics who is blind and needed a guide, Shahin said.
"Is to practice your faith and pray a crime in America? This is a real problem," Shahin said at an impromptu news conference Tuesday at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport.
"How would you guys feel if six pastors or rabbis were removed from a Saudi or Egyptian Arabic airplane?" said Ahmad Shqeirat, another of the ejected imams.
CAIR said it is calling on authorities to investigate "whether proper procedures were followed by security personnel and members of the US Airways flight crew."
"We are concerned that crew members, passengers and security personnel may have succumbed to fear and prejudice based on stereotyping of Muslims and Islam," said Nihad Awad, the Washington-based group's executive director in a statement.
U.S. Airways officials have said that passengers raised concerns about the imams through a note passed to a flight attendant.
Police were called after the captain and airport security workers asked the men to leave the plane and they refused, said airline spokeswoman Andrea Rader. She said the rest of the flight's 141 passengers and five crew members were re-screened for boarding and the plane departed about three hours after the men were removed.
Airport spokesman Patrick Hogan said some witnesses said some of the imams made anti-American comments about the war in Iraq before boarding the flight, and that some of the men asked for seat belt extensions even though a flight attendant thought they did not need them.
"There were a number of things that gave the flight crew pause," Hogan said. It was not immediately possible to verify whether the passengers who reported suspicious activity witnessed it themselves.
Marwan Sadeddin, another of the imams, said they did nothing wrong or suspicious.
"Just tell me one activity or one deed that we did that looks weird," Sadeddin said. "Nothing unusual whatsoever. When we got to the plane, we took our seats normally. We sit down."
Shahin, in pressing Muslims and non-Muslims to boycott of the airline if it does not change its ways, said when the men returned to the airport Tuesday morning to try to use their tickets or buy new ones, the carrier refused and said they had been refunded their fare and would not be allowed to purchase other tickets on the flight.
"They know what they have to do, they have to be fair and just with everybody," he said.
Airline spokesman Morgan Durrant said afterward that he was not aware of the ticketing decision and could not comment.
But US Airways Group Inc., said it was interviewing crew members and ground workers to find out what happened.
"We do not tolerate discrimination of any kind and will continue to exhaust our internal investigation until we know the facts of this case and can provide answers for the employees and customers involved in this incident," the airline said in a statement.
"We are always concerned when passengers are inconvenienced and especially concerned when a situation occurs that causes customers to feel their dignity was compromised. We do not tolerate discrimination of any kind."
The men eventually booked a flight on Northwest Airlines to Phoenix, where five of the six clerics live. The other imam is based in Bakersfield, California.

WHITE HOUSE COMMSSION ON AVIATION SAFETY AND SECURITYTHE DOT STATUS REPORT
By mid-1996, FAA, through a grant to Northwest Airlines, had developed a prototype automated passenger profiling system known as Computer-Assisted Passenger Screening or CAPS. In September 1996, a follow-on grant was awarded to Northwest both to refine the program to achieve operational capability and to assist in adapting CAPS to other airlines’ reservation systems. Northwest met with other air carriers in the fall, conducted preliminary system tests during the winter, and progressed to operational tests on selected flights in its system in April 1997. Northwest has completed the process of phasing in CAPS throughout its domestic system with over 150 stations on-line today.

CNN) -- Northwest Airlines canceled a flight with 180 passengers aboard after the pilot began cursing at passengers while the plane was being prepared for takeoff in Las Vegas on Friday, airline officials and witnesses said.
The cancellation disrupted Easter travel plans for many of the passengers.
From the moment the captain stepped aboard Flight 1190 to Detroit, passengers reported hearing him use "animated" language while talking on his cell phone, Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor told CNN.
"He was having a fit, swearing up a storm," a passenger on the flight said. "He was saying 'F this' and 'F that.'"
When confronted about it by passengers, the pilot became "obscene" and began cursing at the customers, she said. "He made a big disturbance."The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police and the local FAA flight standards office were notified, Gregor said. Police arrived on the scene, pulled the pilot aside and interviewed him.

by Kendall Clark an article on NORTHWEST AIRLINES
The first sign of trouble came at the San Francisco International Airport on the morning of Oct. 23, when Arshad Chowdhury was returning to school in Pittsburgh from a trip to the West Coast.
The 26-year-old business administration student at Carnegie Mellon University was waiting to catch Northwest Airlines Flight 342 to Pittsburgh when an announcement summoned him to the airline desk.
At first Chowdhury, a U.S. citizen who was born in America after his parents migrated from Bangladesh, did not imagine there could be possibly be any problem.
Chowdhury suspected there must have been a mix up with the ticket. But an airline official informed him that he could not board the plane because his name had a “phonetic similarity” to one on a government watch-list.
“I didn’t know what he meant,” recalls the MBA student whose last name is a common South Asian surname. “But I was very cooperative, since obviously there was a mistake.”
Within minutes, he was surrounded by police and FBI agents in full view of an increasingly suspicious group of passengers and although the FBI subsequently cleared him, Northwest airline officials refused to let him board the flight.
He finally got to Pittsburgh on a US Airways flight, but it was not the end of his unfortunate tryst with airport security.
In November, when he was flying home to Connecticut for Thanksgiving, he was summoned again. Apparently Northwest Airlines had put a “block” on his name, a revelation that sent shivers down his spine.
“How would you feel if your name was on a terrorist watch-list?” he asks. “I don’t know how far the information spread. It might have prevented me from renting a car … or heaven forbid if there was another terrorist attack while I was on the list.”
Although the block has since been rectified, Chowdhury is one of five claims made in lawsuits filed by the American Civil Liberties Union accusing four airlines of unfairly kicking Middle Eastern-looking men off their flights.
Fingerprinting Foreigners
“Flying while Arab” a post 9/11 alteration of the phrase “driving while black,” which refers to racial profiling complaints against the police for targeting black motorists has in recent months sent civil and immigration rights groups on the offensive even as the authorities announce new measures to beef up homeland security.
Exactly a year after the attacks on America, the Justice Department will implement a new program to fingerprint and photograph more than 100,000 U.S. visa holders every year posing an “elevated national security concern.”
Announcing the plan on Monday, Justice Department officials said there would be a 20-day testing period at several unnamed ports of entry beginning on Sept. 11, and all remaining entry ports would implement the new system on Oct. 1, 2002.
Called the National Security Entry/Exit Registration System, the program is aimed at eventually tracking “virtually all” of the 35 million foreign visitors who land in the United States each year. Justice Department officials estimate the system would be fully operational by 2005.
But until that happens, approximately 100,000 visitors from five countries would initially be tracked. These include nationals from Sudan, Iran, Iraq, Syria and Libya which, along with North Korea and Cuba make up the U.S. State Department’s list of state sponsors of terrorism.
Rights Groups Cry Racial Profiling, Officials Disagree
Civil and immigrant rights groups however have vociferously denounced the new program as a “fancy but enormous” exercise in racial profiling.
“This system ...will certainly lead to racial profiling,” says Cyrus Mehta, chairman of the Immigration Law Committee of the Association of the Bar of the City of New York.
“Other countries also have militants, but this is a matter of applying the rules only to a certain group of people. How else would you determine this except by profiling? This is all very subjective.”
‘Just Be Honest’
In a multiracial, multiethnic country that sees itself, among other things, as a refuge for all the world’s huddled masses, profiling is a dark, dirty word in the American lexicon. But on both sides of the profiling divide, some experts wonder why the authorities simply do not come out and admit to racial profiling.
“There is definitely a nationality classification going on here, which usually translates into a racial or ethnic classification,” Christopher Malone, a political science professor specializing in U.S. racial issues at New York’s Pace University. “It is strange that the justice department doesn’t call it this I would prefer for them to just be honest about what they are doing rather than trying to have it both ways.”
When it comes to official policy on profiling, Charles Bahn, a professor of forensic psychology at New York’s John Jay College of Criminal Justice, says that in the course of a long career in the field, he has seen what he calls “three different periods in racial profiling.”
“In the first period, the police used racial profiling very widely and I think at great cost particularly on young blacks and Hispanics,” he says.

***"Where Was The Video Surveillance?" ***
Northwest Airlines is HIDING THE VIDEO OF THE ATTACK because the video reveals that we are innocent and is evidentiary of their crimes:

Delta Launches Test of
Aircraft Transponder
and Video Camera
Systems
Airline also announces completion of cockpit door bar installations
ATLANTA, Oct. 29, 2001 -- Delta Air Lines (NYSE:DAL) announced today that it will begin testing enhanced transponder and cabin video surveillance systems onboard one of its MD-88
aircraft. Delta is the first airline to test such a comprehensive security solution - enhanced transponder system, onboard
cabin video surveillance system and cockpit door security bar - focused on
enhancing aircraft security.
On October 1, 2001, DOT Secretary
Norman Mineta released recommendations
from the Rapid Response teams to
improve aircraft and airport security.
The aircraft security report outlined 17
recommendations, including: (1) industry
evaluation of the use of cameras and
lighting outside the flight deck door
Discussions regarding the second phase of cockpit reinforcements were
recently launched. Delta and ***Northwest Airlines are serving as
***co-chairs of an industry task force developing recommended specifications.
Yet Northwest Airlines Will Not State the obvious:
Northwest Airlines Corp. would not confirm or deny whether it has installed cameras. Spokesman Scott Tennant said, for security reasons, the airline cannot discuss on-board security measures. ------- This is very cool. http://iagblog.blogspot.com/2005_08_01_archive.html
YET WHEN WE ASKED NORTHWEST AIRLINES FOR VIDEO THEY QUICKLY VOLUNTEERED "THERE WAS NO VIDEO!" AIRLINE SECURITY CERTAINLY DID NOT SEEM TO BE AN ISSUE AT THIS POINT...
Between Northwest Airlines planned use of brain wave recordings, intensive racial profiling initiatives and release of private passenger info to the FBI and NASA without permission, one is to wonder if NWA has cameras and video on board their aircraft? We feel the answer is obvious. NORTHWEST IS HIDING EVIDENCE OF THE ATTACK.

Muslim Passengers Kicked Off Northwest Flight
http://www.crescentlife.com/heal%20the%20world/cair_reports.htm
Islamic group condemns airline's action as "racial and religious profiling"
(WASHINGTON-DC, 9/21/2001) - The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), a Washington-based Islamic advocacy group, today condemned an incident on Thursday in Minneapolis, Minn., in which three Muslim passengers were kicked off a Northwest airlines flight because other passengers refused to fly with them.
Media reports indicate that the three men, who all live in Utah and were on their way home from Philadelphia, were taken from a connecting flight in Minneapolis. Northwest says that security rules say the airline has to "re-accommodate" passengers if their presence makes other passengers uncomfortable.
SEE: http://www.startribune.com/stories/1576/704367.html
"This is racial and religious profiling of the worst kind. Both the passengers and the airplane personnel should be ashamed of their actions," said CAIR Executive Director Nihad Awad. Awad added that CAIR has received more than 500 reports of anti-Muslim discrimination, including three deaths, following the terrorist attacks on New York and Washington."

WRONG THEN, WRONG NOW Racial Profiling Before & After September 11, 2001
This Report compares the practice of "traditional" street-level racial profiling with the post-September
11 profiling of Arabs, Muslims, and South Asians. It concludes that profiling is just as wrong now
as it was before the war on terrorism began. The same arguments that led President Bush and
Attorney General Ashcroft to condemn racial profiling before September 11 should lead them to
abandon it now.
In the months preceding September 11, a national consensus had emerged on the need to combat
racial profiling. In the fearful aftermath of the terrorist attacks, some reevaluated their views. It is now
time to dispel those doubts, reawaken the national consensus, and ban racial profiling in America.
Racial profiling occurs when law enforcement agents impermissibly use race, religion, ethnicity or
national origin in deciding who to investigate. Compelling anecdotal and statistical evidence demonstrates
that minorities are disproportionately targeted by law enforcement.
***I NOW SELECT EXCERPTS FROM THIS REPORT IDENTIFYING
On October 28, 2001, three Arab American women were prevented from boarding their
flight to New York City from Minneapolis because airline personnel had overheard them
quietly praying before the flight and became concerned on hearing one of the women say the
word "Allah."124 (apparently this is a crime?)
On September 26, 2001, a group of six passengers of Indian ethnicity were questioned aboard
a United Airlines flight from Los Angeles to Washington, D.C. The men were taken to the back
of the plane, where they were first questioned by a pilot and then by FBI and INS.132
The story of Ali al Maqtari, a French teacher from Yemen, provides a chilling example of what many
Arabs and Muslims have faced since September 11...
The federal agents falsely accused Mr. al Maqtari of violating the immigration
laws, abusing his wife, and conspiring with terrorists from Russia;...Even after polygraph tests showed that
he was telling the truth, but after INS and FBI officials indicated he would be freed, Mr. al Maqtari was
held for an additional seven weeks, during which time he was housed with hardened criminals in two
separate jails, taunted by guards, and limited to one phone call per week.100

_Chowdhury v. Northwest Airlines Corp. 238 F.Supp.2d 1153 (N.D.Cal. 2002.) ("This lawsuit arises out of an incident at San Francisco International Airport approximately one month after September 11, 2001. The gravamen of plaintiff's complaint is that he was denied boarding on a Northwest (“Northwest”) flight even after Northwest, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and airport security had determined that he did not pose a security risk. Plaintiff, who is a United States citizen of Bangladeshi ancestry, makes claims under state and federal anti-discrimination laws. Defendants move to dismiss on the grounds that plaintiff's state law claims are preempted by federal aviation law and his federal civil rights claims conflict with such law… Defendants' argument fails because there is no apparent conflict between the federal statutes prohibiting racial discrimination and the federal law giving air carriers the discretion to refuse to carry passengers for safety reasons. Plaintiff's claim is that he was refused passage because of his ethnicity; Northwest knew he did not pose a safety risk. The fact that the pilot is in control of the aircraft does not, as a court in the Central District recently concluded, "grant [the airlines] a license to discriminate." Assem Bayaa v. United Airlines, 02-4368 FMC (C.D.Cal. Oct. 9, 2002). Defendants do not cite any case holding-in any context-that the federal civil rights statutes conflict with another, more recent federal law. In sum, there is simply no legal basis for dismissing plaintiff's federal civil rights claims.")
